Comparison
SafetyDataSheetAPI vs Cloud Document AI Services
General document services read text, layout and tables. An SDS-specific API returns a structured safety data sheet record.

How to read this page. Statements about SafetyDataSheetAPI describe what the API does today and can be checked against the OpenAPI contract. Third parties are described by category in general terms only. Products change, so verify current capabilities and pricing with each vendor. What these services are
Amazon Textract, Azure AI Document Intelligence and Google Document AI are general-purpose cloud services for document processing: OCR, layout, tables and key-value extraction, with options to build custom extractors for your own document types. They are broad by design and are not SDS-specific products.
What changes for safety data sheets
| Concern | General cloud document AI | SafetyDataSheetAPI |
|---|---|---|
| Default output | Text, layout, tables and key-value pairs from the document. | A 16-section SDS record, with a field per SDS section (hazards_identification, composition, transport_information and so on). |
| SDS-specific fields | If you want a normalized SDS record, you define the schema and build and maintain the extraction yourself, for example with custom models or queries. | Provided as the standard output; see the field coverage matrix. |
| Quality signals | Service-specific confidence values, which you interpret and map to a review policy. | A document-level confidence_score and warnings in every response. |
| Integration | The cloud vendor's SDKs, authentication and quotas. | REST with an OpenAPI contract, clients, bulk jobs with signed webhooks, and an MCP server. |
| Where it runs | Inside the cloud account you choose. | A hosted API. See data residency and security. |
When a cloud document service is the right choice
- You process many different document types and want one general platform.
- You are standardized on one cloud and need processing to stay inside it.
- You have the capacity to design, train, evaluate and maintain SDS-specific extraction.
When an SDS-specific API is the better fit
- You want structured SDS records without building and maintaining the schema.
- You want confidence and warnings to feed a review workflow.
- SDS is the document type you need to get right, and you prefer one REST contract for it.
A practical test
- Take 50 SDS PDFs across suppliers, scan quality and languages.
- Count the steps and code needed to turn each service's output into your target SDS record.
- Compare fields against values you have verified, and measure review effort.
FAQ
Can I use a cloud document service together with SafetyDataSheetAPI?
Yes, they solve different problems. The API takes the PDF and returns the SDS record, so it does not need a separate OCR step.
Do these services have an SDS model?
They are general-purpose services, and we do not describe their current model catalogs. Check each vendor's documentation for what is available today.
Is one more accurate than the other?
We have not run an accuracy comparison and do not claim one. Test on your own documents.
