Comparison
SafetyDataSheetAPI vs SDS Management Platforms
A management platform is where you keep and manage SDS. An extraction API turns SDS documents into data for the systems you already run.

How to read this page. Statements about SafetyDataSheetAPI describe what the API does today and can be checked against the OpenAPI contract. Third parties are described by category in general terms only. Products change, so verify current capabilities and pricing with each vendor. We have not run an accuracy comparison and make no accuracy claims about any product, including our own.
Two different jobs
SDS management platforms (for example Sphera, VelocityEHS, 3E or SDS Manager) are typically systems of record for chemical and SDS compliance: a managed library, search, distribution and compliance workflows. An extraction API does one thing: it reads an SDS PDF and returns structured data. They overlap less than they appear to, and some teams use both.
How they differ by category
| Question | SDS management platform (category) | SafetyDataSheetAPI |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A system of record you adopt and work inside. | An API you call from your own systems. |
| Where does the data live? | In the platform. | In your own database or EHS/ERP, in your schema. |
| Migration | Usually involves adopting the platform's workflows. | No platform to adopt: send a PDF, receive JSON, XML or CSV. |
| Interface | Primarily a user interface, with integration options that vary by vendor. | REST with an OpenAPI contract, clients, bulk jobs, webhooks and an MCP server. |
| Review control | Defined by the platform. | You set thresholds on confidence_score and rules for warnings. |
Choose a platform if
- You want a managed SDS library and compliance workflow and are ready to adopt it.
- You need features beyond data extraction, such as distribution and workflow management, and prefer to buy them.
Choose an extraction API if
- You already own the compliance stack and need SDS data inside it.
- You build or run EHS, ERP or QHSE software and need extraction on the ingest side of your product.
- You want control over schema, review thresholds and where the data is stored.
Using both
If you already use a platform, an extraction API can feed your own database or reporting layer, and may feed the platform where it offers an import or API. Check the vendor's current integration options; we do not describe any vendor's integrations here.
FAQ
Does SafetyDataSheetAPI replace an SDS management platform?
No. It extracts structured data from SDS documents. It is not a managed SDS library or compliance workflow system.
Do you integrate with a specific platform?
We publish an API rather than platform-specific connectors. See the API docs and the SDS Manager alternative guide.
Is this page a feature comparison of named vendors?
No. Vendors are named as examples of a category. Verify each vendor's current capabilities and pricing with them.
